In June, Canadian manufacturing sales declined by 1.7% to $71.5 billion, with widespread decreases across 14 of 21 subsectors, primarily impacting the petroleum and coal product, chemical, and machinery subsectors. Notably, motor vehicle sales saw a significant 11.4% increase. On a quarterly basis, total sales fell by 0.8% in Q2 2023, mainly due to decreased sales in petroleum and coal products. Year-over-year, total sales dropped by 1.4% in June. Constant-dollar sales decreased by 1.0%, reflecting a lower sales volume. The petroleum and coal product subsector experienced a 8.3% decline. Sales of chemicals fell by 6.5%, influenced by factors including fertilizer sales disruptions due to global supply issues. Motor vehicle sales surged, and motor vehicle parts sales declined. Sales in five provinces decreased, with Alberta and Ontario leading the decline. Quebec experienced an increase in sales due to primary metals and chemical products. Total inventories rose by 0.3% in June.
